Terengganu

According to Athirah Zaki, Terengganu food has shown the influence of Thai culture and taste. Terengganu has abundance of rice based dishes such as Nasi Dagang, Nasi Kunyit, Nasi Kuning, Nasi Berlauk, and Nasi Kerabu. There is Laksam, Laksa Terengganu, Otak-otak, Satar, Ketupat Sotong and Kerepok Lekor. Dining out is relatively inexpensive and there are always plenty of choices range from hotel food to hawker food. The most popular food in Terengganu is Keropok Lekor, Nasi Dagang and Satar.

Keropok Lekor
Athirah Zaki said, Keropok Lekor is a famous local dishes in Terengganu. Some call them fish sausages or fish sticks but in Terengganu they are called ‘keropok’.  It is the specialty from Terengganu. It is the snack instead of a proper meal and sometimes is served as the snack before meal. For your information there are three types of keropok. There are:

The long chewy ones are called keropok lekor. This gives it a fishier flavour but tastes as good as the crispy ones according to some people. For your information, you can eat keropok lekor in two ways, it can be eaten either when it is steamed or deep fried, both give different taste. Sometime the boiled one will have fishy smell when they are no longer hot. After that, it will be dry in the sun thoroughly, then deep-fry in hot oil before eating. You can eat Keropok Keping with another food likes fried rice and fried noodles. If you do not taste it with rice or noodles, you can eat them with our own way.

Nasi Dagang

According to Athirah Zaki, the famous restaurant of Nasi Dagang is Mak Ngah Nasi Dagang restaurant at Chendering. Nasi Dagang or literally the ‘trader’s rice’ which is said is the rice that was eaten by trader on their business journey. Nasi dagang is perhaps the most representing food for Terengganu. The dish is mixes of rice and glutinous rich with coconut milk added once it is cooked. The rice is eaten with tuna curry and light vegetable pickles.

Satar

Satar is another fish snack in Terengganu Malay cuisine. It is mixture of pounded fish, shallots and ginger wrapped in banana leaf, pierce of few by one single bamboo stick then barbecue over low fire. The best stall are by the road of Chendering, sold by an old couple in a Ford Vargon or Warung Che Wan at Kuala Kemaman or you can try your luck at Central Market. ( Athirah Zaki, 2015 )
